Angel Heart (1987)

Lou Cyphre is looking for a friend of his, Johnny Favorite and has hired private investigator Harry Angel to help him out. However the deeper Harry gets into the location of Favorite, the nastier everything gets. People he interviews die soon after Harry speaks to them and the investigating in New Orleans is just getting downright dangerous. Soon Harry will learn what Louis connection to Johnny Favorite is, and why Harry was the perfect fit for the job.

Overall: I love this movie. Let me say that first of all. The “unrated” edition is of course preferred. Gotta have every bit of the director’s intent in your viewing of this movie. The movie was so controversial not just for the blood but also for the realism of the interracial sex scenes with Lisa Bonet and Mickey Rourke. Lisa was fresh off her angelic role in “The Cosby Show” – a nice family-oriented show with great morals and values and she had some giant “cajones” to appear in a role involving such sex and blood and death. The scenes though involving her were controversial not just cause they were steamy and realistic but also due to the interracial factor too. In 1987, this wasn’t as acceptable as it may be today (2003). I can say that Mickey has had no better roles that this one and a few films were a step or two below ("9 ˝ Weeks", "The Last Dragon"). But he’s a fairly undistinguished actor who pulled off a nice job in this movie. What is so cool is not just the ending but how the film slowly leads up to it. It’s an interesting idea and the execution was very nice. Robert DeNiro was also quite good and the facial hair definitely made his character more creepy. I whole-heartedly recommend this movie for everyone.
