The Funhouse (1981)

- written July 1999

Going to the Carnival has been scarier than this but never more dangerous. Amy is just a normal girl wanting everything, including a good boyfriend. But on this night she's gonna get all the peer pressure she needs. After lying to her parents on where she was going, she ends up at the carnival with her boyfriend, Buzz, and 2 friends, Liz and Richie. They decide after seeing all the usual sights such as the 2 headed cows, Madame Zena, and the magic show, that staying overnight in the Funhouse is a good idea. The Funhouse is a ride filled with scary things, functioning similar to Disneyland's Peter Pan ride. But tonight the 4 sneak out of their carriages and hide deep inside the ride. Once the park closes, they all make love to their respective significant others and then await dawn. But their hiding location is over the quarters of Madame Zena and she is being paid to have sex with some weird guy in a Frankenstein costume. But when he strangles her to death and even the Barker can't control the raging emotions of the killer, the 4 kids find out the truth: the killer is really a deformed man who has some mental problems. Then the bad guys discover that the 4 kids saw the whole scene, so they are ready to flush the kids out. During all this time though, Amy's brother has been tagging along in secret so he can watch his sister and rat on her to their parents. But trust me, they will all get the scare of their lives, and it won't be pretty.

Overall: Fairly forgettable film which is very slow. The film tries hard to be serious and offers a semi-decent plot but the ride isn't simply that big from the outside to be that big on the inside. The creature bears quite a resemblance to the creature, Sloth, in "The Goonies." Considering this was made 4 years earlier, I'll assume the latter film was copying. The opening scene of the film is perhaps the best, because Amy is stalked by her brother while she takes a shower. It's "Halloween" vs. "Psycho" and after this scene the film goes downhill.
