Ambition Withdraw (2003)

The story of one man, Eric Scealf, and his unrequited ambition in having his group being the stars that they deserve to be without selling out or compromising themselves along the way. We watch the band over 15 years as they continue to pull themselves out of the Tennessee Rock Gutter only to find that selling out could be the only way to succeed.

Overall: Ok, so this is not a horror film but once in a while I do want to try and plug other stuff so I can use my site to do some good once in a while.

I definitely learned a lot about this music genre (normally all I hear is pop-type stuff). I think the film did a lot to open the viewer's mind as to not only the genre but what was going on inside the head of Eric (as much as one could figure out). I really enjoyed the trek through the history of the group & Eric’s own issues in just about hitting stardom only to find themselves back at a bar singing in front of handfuls of people. I think one thing we can really learn from the movie is perhaps what other bands may have lost in getting where they are. We can watch all the Vh1 “behind the music” and always get the same point: everyone in the group was fine, until they hit stardom. Basically the moment they hit it big, that’s when they all changed. I think we can learn that you may need to “sell-out” a bit to get the first album and all your values & ideas after that will definitely be different than when you started. I think we finally see a band who won’t give in to what most media expects of them and as a result can’t get the support of that same media they need to make it big. Basically, the group must finally figure out what they really want: keeping their own values and staying as a local band or selling out. In addition I both liked & disliked the whole “Dr. Gangrene” thing. I liked the guy and I hope to see more of him, but not in a rockumentary. His presence was really out of left field and just not appropriate for the film. I really think he’d be something to watch in some other movie. Overall, I think this is a nice piece of work and I do recommend this for others to watch. I’ve included a link below to Jason’s page so everyone can try and take a look at this art.

Comparison: This is Spinal Tap meets Sweet Home Alabama
