Eight Legged Freaks (2002)

Chris is returning to his home town after self-banishment of 10 years. Seems he caught a friend of his with a girl he liked, beat up the boy, lied to the girl, left his dying dad to die lonely and now he’s back. But a canister of special toxic goo has spilled into a nearby lake which has caused various insects to be possessed of special vitamins which a nearby spider farm feeds off of. Soon the spiders start to grow 1000x their height and the town soon has to battle super tall and nasty spiders bent on taking over the world.
Overall: Only reason to rent this is to really see the computer-created spiders. I mean to watch the old monster movies like “They” and compare it to this film will truly show why the movies are getting better with time. The stories though suck just as much! The movie tries to make cheap references to other movies (6th sense, Friday the 13th, Spiderman) and then forgets it’s own story. I watched the dvd deleted scenes and I got to say the editors screwed up. The 1st deleted scene basically sets up the plot brilliantly by giving you clues to what the mayor is up to and give u an idea of why the mall is so popular for the ending. As the film stands the mall all of a sudden appears at the 1 hr mark and the deleted scenes make you realize how important it was. There is another scene that features the trap door spiders and the ostriches which would have made the film more concise and without it, some of the other scenes just really come out of nowhere and that makes the film not as good as it could have been. The original ending is also a deleted scene and thank god - enjoy the way the films does end - good call on that one. Comparison: They meets Jurassic Park |
