Back Woods (2001)

A couple young adults on the way to camping and other fun stuff accidentally do a hit-and-run on an old lady. After she dies, they decide to speed off and forget about it. Well her 30 year old son Luther isn’t about to take this lying down. He summons Mangina, a hermaphroditic forest spirit, for the power and will to take revenge on the killers. Luther is out for blood and he’ll find more than that.

Overall: The movie tries to have fun with it’s audience but still comes out as nothing more than a rip-off of other films. The killer is basically Norman Bates of “Psycho” meets “Pumpkinhead.” The kids are acting as if this was “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and the narrator is pretending this film was “Gremlins 2” with the direct talks to the camera. The effects are pretty cheesy and the video quality is worse than watching trailers for movies on the internet using Real Audio. And who is gonna forget that the opening credits have misspellings? Do the video engineers have dyslexia? And did the producers lack the funds to run out to “Party City” for a more realistic Sheriff’s costume? I thought this movie must have shared the budget of “Vampire Femmes.” The movie is unique in some ways but the sexual innuendos and plot veins almost require the audience be prolific in internet porn in order to truly “get” this story.

          Comparison: Psycho meets Ax “em
