Bones (2001)

In 1979, a local legend and purveyor of illegal acts, Bones was the king of his city. But a drug deal gone rotten has him dead and a vast conspiracy surrounding the killers. It is 22 years later and a couple young adults looking to make improvements in the inner city buy his house. But by trying to renovate the old Bones place, the 4 entrepreneurs awaken the spirit of Bones and he not only wants to do away with his new tenants, but also avenge himself on the guilty parties who are still alive.

Overall: This movie isn’t really as bad as it may look and sounds (especially in comparison to some of the films I’ve reviewed). I was expecting a lot less so the movie easily met my expectations. I didn’t give Snoopy (spelling intended) much credit for acting given his porn and rap careers. But he wasn’t that bad...but then again I’m sure Ice-T would be very believable as a pimp, considering he used to be one. So Snoopy did a good job “playing himself” and easily outshined Pam Grier. I expected a ton more from her and found the rabid dog did a better job. I just started wondering why the white girls always played the girlfriends. Does every black man have a white girlfriend? As for the story, it seems to lose track of itself in deciding how Bones can come back from the dead. It pulls a "Hellraiser" for the regeneration part but then basically allows him to kill even without regeneration, so what’s the point? The dog’s existence isn’t fully explained nor is the stealing of ideas from “In the Mouth of Madness” for the “souls” which want to break the plane between earth and hell. What really is Bones' connection to the other trapped souls? How come they can’t escape and regenerate like he does? Why are they even there if they only try to kill 1 person? And the blood did look truly fake...must have been the same mixture that was used in the scene from “Ravenous” where Guy Pierce was wounded and had to “eat or die.” And just ‘cause cheesy white writers and directors pull the typical horror film ending doesn’t mean that this film had to do the same...they should have gone their own way!

Comparison: Boyz in the Hood meets Ghostbusters
