The Ugly (1997)

Simon is being visited by yet another shrink, Doctor Schumacher. But he thinks this one may be a little bit more naïve than the rest. So she asks about his life story and in between beatings by the prison police, he tells it. But he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve and may be able to outwit, outplay and outlast the rest!

Overall: Known across the Internet as a classic, I was disappointed. The film had a good start and did some unique stuff (flashbacks with the Doc interacting) but the last ½ of the film made so little sense. The film is 90% flashbacks to a few murders and generally his childhood of getting picked on. Does he see things, does he not see things, did he kill for pleasure or did he kill to satiate the demons inside him, etc. All this goes basically unanswered and by the end you wonder what the whole reason was to make this movie. The Doctor serves no real function since she didn’t get her questions answered anyway and with the flashbacks so dominating in the movie, you lose sight of who everyone is. And I’m still unsure why we have an asylum with 4 people in it: warden, 2 security officers, and 1 inmate. And what’s with the black blood? Couldn’t’ afford catsup? I mean if Simon’s blood was black that could be amusing plotline but when all the victims have black blood, that makes no sense. What amazed me was that the boy who picked on him as a kid looked exactly like Julie, his girlfriend. The kids had same outfits & same hairstyle. A disappointing film.
