The Forsaken (2001)

Shawn is trying to earn some money for his sister’s wedding and agrees to drive a car from one coast to another. Doing so put him into contact with a hunter of diseased blood-drinkers, Nick, and eventually victims, Megan, and carriers of the disease, Kit. Soon enough it is Shawn and Nick who need to save themselves before they get “the disease” and they will have to kill Kit, to do so.

Overall: So did you figure out the film was about vampires? The movie tries not to use the word and even goes so far as to hint that vampirism is a form of AIDS: once u get it, you can’t really be saved…only die slower thru use of “cocktails.” The “history” of the vampires…I mean disease-spreading evil- doers who are scared of sunlight….dates back to the 1200’s when Frenchmen were battling the Turks at Antioch and 8 Frenchmen turned to the Devil for his assistance. But to seal the deal, they had to drink the blood of a 9th soldier and upon the break of dawn, they realized they hated what they did and forever couldn’t stand sunlight. 800 years go by and 4 are left alive and our 2 heroes are battling one of them named Kit (Not exactly French is it?). I felt the movie was ok, didn’t understand what the deal was with all the car problems or really why Megan was picked and why Kit had such a boner for her…they never explained why she even escaped his clutches in the first place. The story in a lot of ways is like “John Carpenter’s Vampires” -- got a vampire hunter who gets help of an innocent (in "JC’s Vamps" it was the priest) and they try to save a girl they know is linked to the chief bad guy. Then with lots of hotel rooms and old cars they do battle, ending up in some desert town that’s deserted. The film’s 2 leads were both good in “Final Destination” but the film also features 2 people from “Disturbing Behavior” and 3 from the director’s other work, “Outside Ozona.” Film has surprising amount of nudity…I figured such young-uns would have shied away from such roles. Not bad, not good…just exists.
