The Frighteners (1996)

Frank Bannister is just trying to make a buck, with his own special skills. But not everyone finds his work amusing. See, Frank can see ghosts – a car accident, which killed his wife, gave him special abilities and he uses that to ply his trade. But this city is losing residents faster than he can take advantage of him. Seems 26 people have all died of heart attacks in 4 years and when he gets connected to one of the victim’s he’s the first suspect. But with this power, Frank can see that there are #’s embedded into the victims faces which only he can see and the number is greater than 26, it’s really over 38...and that’s the kicker. Young 60’s killer John Bartlett left this world with 12 victims and somehow he has found his way back. Only Frank can stop him.

Overall: Best part of this film is the effects. The reaper within the walls of the house pushes this film from “cheesy” status into “top horror films of all-time” status. The effects make this film a winner and the story isn’t that bad either. Barlett’s co-conspirator/girlfriend is released from prison in 1989 and starts using the Ouija board to bring Barlett back from the other side after he’s been executed and the 2 decide they want the “all-time record” for kills. The weirdest part of the film is the beginning. Given how the film ends, the beginning really doesn’t make sense.

          Comparison: Ghost meets Ghostbusters
