The Others (2001)

SummaryNicole Kidman and her 2 kids live in a large house and hope one day her husband will return alive from the ravages of World War II. In addition the 3 of them are trying to avoid going insane because they suspect the house has intruders. But even with the help of 3 servants, the inhabitants are still seeing and hearing things, and it will take all their strength to keep themselves alive. It doesn’t help that her kids are allergic to sunlight so with everything being dark, it’s not a surprise that evil things are gonna happen.

Overall: This is a very good film that you must get a hold of. It can be scary at times but the truth genius of the film is both the atmosphere and Nicole Kidman. I’m a big fan of her acting work (such as “To Die For”) anyway so I a “homer.” But she does such a tremendous job showing both her character’s side of being a disciplinarian but also doing whatever she can out of love for her kids. You really understand how much she cares, no matter how mean she gets. She total has her part down pat and that plus the colors and lighting make the film a “must-see.” The fact that the kids must remain in the dark at all times definitely made for some tough plot subtexts and you know they’d have to work hard to find a story that worked with such character limitations. But the additions of the lost husband and the 3 servants…it’s just a brilliant film.
