Red Planet (2000)

Earth is running out of good air and enough space and it is now time to find another home: Mars. The world has sent some probes to Mars in hopes of creating livable amounts of oxygen so that planet could be habitable. But since the experiment begun, the oxygen levels have reduced and this has caused Gallagher and his crew to take a look at the problem. But before the reach the planet a giant solar flare destroys much of the ship's tools and communicators leaving most of the team stranded on Mars. Plus they find an enemy is with them: their own mechanical robot, Aimee, has malfunctioned once on Mars and is stalking the survivors one by one. Gallagher must fight off Martian parasites, low oxygen levels and little hope of survival, when escaping the clutches of Aimee. Not a chance!

Overall: Released about the same time as "Mission to Mars," the film got typecast as being the same film with the same story, but they aren't. This film tries to be horror by doing essentially a sequel to the character of Hal in 2001. "Hal Gone Bad" should be the real title. But the film gets lost in itself by challenging us with stories of Martian parasites, low oxygen levels, love stories and then Aimee. The film should have kept its "Man's Best Friend" mentality by keeping "Aimee" and losing everything else, or perhaps sticking with the parasites. Too include all of this makes the task for people to survive nearly impossible to be realistic. The deleted scenes on the dvd showed how much crap they left out of it and none of it even bordered on the horror story lines. That shows you that directors were confused by their own product. It got released looking as horror but it just couldn't convince me!

Comparison: 2001 meets Ghost in the Machine
