Jurgen Prochnow plays a Nazi General who takes over a Romanian city. He finds “The Keep” a large fortress, which has been guarded by the townspeople for centuries. When Berlin hasn’t heard much from the area they send Gabriel Byrne to investigate. Seems the fortress is there to keep something in. Prochnow has gotten the clue and he tries as hard as he can to convince Byrne to keep away from the mystery. Bryne refuses and sends away for Romanian historian Ian McKellan who realizes what powerful force rests in the Keep. He becomes determined to let it out and allow it to destroy all of mankind. Coming to the rescue is Scott Glenn who seems to have a historical connection to the Keep and must finally find his destiny. Who will win, the mysterious Evil or the Nazi’s?
Overall: This is an interesting film with unique plot twists and moral quagmires. However the word on the street is the book by F. Paul Wilson is a hell of a lot better and even scarier. The most interesting part is how evil does something have to be when you employ your enemy to help you defeat it. We have Nazi’s calling in the help of Jews to save mankind. And even then, the question comes up…should you just release the ultimate evil and let Earth start over???? If anything I did think the film could have been better and maybe that’s cause the good stuff was left in the book. But I think to do it justice, the film probably would have gone 3 hours plus. By itself, the film is good. Am wishing we could get a director’s cut copy on dvd! Comparison: The Gate meets Saving Private Ryan |
