Body Parts (1991)

Bill is just an "ordinary Joe" who is trying to help figure out why serial killers do what they do. But an accident on the road to see a prisoner changes his life, forever. The doctors find that Bill's right arm would need be amputated but that just as swift they have a donor arm waiting for him. Seems that Dr. Webb (preeminent doctor in transplant) has a donor all set up, in the body of a serial killer. Bill gets the killer's right arm, with the left arm going to a painter and the 2 legs to a young basketball player. But all of these limbs seem to have a mind of their own. Oh yeah, and the serial killer is coming back to gets all of his parts sewn back on!!!!

Overall: Basically the film works but not as intended. The characters all seem to have problems with the new limbs (as if the idea was probable in the first place!). What works is that you could have a nice story where you debate where one's soul is, especially that of a killer's. But then the story tries to toss in the fact that the killer ain't dead yet and he wants his parts back. That may work too, if it wasn't for the fact all 3 "donees" were having nightmares of the killer's victims. So it was 2 stories which do work, inter-spliced providing for at the very least a definitely unrealistic story. What makes this film truly unique is that its release date was set about 1 month after Jeffrey Dahmer was caught by police and victim's body parts were discovered all over his house. So the film was delayed one year but with the original title. The film was a big "flopperoo" but definitely not without its publicity. Rarely has a film or tv show ever been "preempted" by real life but this definitely can be chalked up in the history books.
