The Believers (1987)

Cal Jamison is a therapist who is concentrating on rehabilitating cops who have "lost their way." Helping on the case of one cop who believes he's being persecuted drives Cal ns his son into the strange world of Santeria. But as his friends and family start to die off and children's bodies start to appear in the city, Cal realizes he's done more than just brought his work home with him. Basically his son is his work and also the object of the cult that intends to take his life. Cal must do all he can to fight back, but that may not be good enough. Because these people can get to you, through your mind!

Overall: I liked this film for a few reasons, firstly being one of the films even made that deals with Santeria. Also it does attempt to show the goodness in this religion. Obviously the point of the film is to show how this religion can be used for evil, but even one of the characters asks which religions haven't been the focus for mass murders (least of which are say, The Crusades?). The romance is kind of cheesy and the scenes involving Cal's kid can be as painful as tooth-pulling (or like the entire film "Mercury Rising") in their morbidity and lackluster acting. But stating all that, the story is fairly decent anyway. Have fun, especially watching a very young Jimmy Smits.
