Near Dark (1987)

Caleb is just any other good ole farm boy, whose tryst with a young girl turns deadly. She bites him and then carries him off to her family. But this just isn’t like any ordinary family. They’re bloodsuckers; some as old as time itself, their bodies stay the same age as when they were first bitten. Caleb is in over his head but his girl, Mae, is there to protect him. For Mae’s sake, the clan keeps him alive despite their desire to tear him apart. But Caleb doesn’t take to being a vampire easily, and his real family goes looking for him. Will Caleb decide this new life is for him or try and fight his way back into humanity?

Overall: One of my all-time favorite films, it is truly unique in the vampire genre. The movie doesn’t actually use the word “vampire” ever but you still know what’s going on. Unlike other vampire films, these bloodsuckers are poor, on the run and basically living day to day to survive. It’s motel after motel and they do whatever it takes to make it. But they understand what it’s all about. No complaining, no bitching about being lonely...they are a family and they’ll protect each other to the death. Most vamp films are about 1 or 2 vamps and hunters out to get them. This is all about the vampires and their internal struggles to survive. It’s gritty, dirty and painful. They do not portray a pretty life, ala “Interview with a Vampire.” And the audience is not convinced to feel sadness or empathy to the vamps. In fact, the bar scene really show us how evil they can be. This film is new, different and frankly, a nice change from normal films. Go get it...now!!!!
