John Reilly has become the inheritor of a nice big Italian Castle. He figures before he sells it, he better check it out. So he moves his wife and daughter out there for a few days when all sorts of strange things start happening. Seems the prior owner, a relative of John's, had a child years back and has been hiding him in the dungeon, beating him incessantly. But with the new tenants, this "freak" named Giorgio has the nerve now to escape and wreck havoc on those who now inhabit this abode. John's wife isn't very cordial to john anymore, since his drinking caused an accident blinding their daughter and killing their son, so when bad things happen John is to blame. John gets so depressed by this outward hate emotion he grabs a prostitute and in his drunken state brings her home to the castle. This of course makes Giorgio hungry and he will now finish what he began - killing.
Overall: This film would be so outlandish and outrageous if it wasn't so true. Basically of all the horror films out there, this is one of the few that you end up hearing about in the local news - people who tie up and cage their kids for years - treating them like animals. They say there are 40-50 serial killers each year killing and going free - I guarantee there is at least twice as many parents out there doing this stuff to their kids. Hell, I felt more sorry for "the freak" in this film, than I was scared of him. The film tries to demonize Giorgio instead of letting us recognize that being screwed over for that many years would probably cause us to react the same - and didn't "the freak" remind you of the drugged out body from "Seven"? Film is watchable but I'm telling ya, it isn't as implausible as it looks! Comparison: 18th Angel meets Hunchback of Notre Dame |
