H.P. Lovecraft's Necronomicon:
Book of the Dead (1994)

The story of H.P. Lovecraft and how he came up with his visions for his books. He insists they are reality and said his research for histories came from the Book of the Dead, and here are 3 of them.

          1) Drowned - Edward De La Poer inherited a house owned previously owned by relatives. He locates a book that details the ability to raise the dead to life, but shows it powerful effects. De La Poer tries it again with very similar results.

          2) The Cold - A house is inhabited by a woman living much longer than she should. In fact, she is well over 100 years old and a local reporter is snooping around. But he's in for a history lesson when he finds out exactly how this woman is living.

          3) Whispers - A serial killer called "The Butcher" is being chased by 2 cops. But after the cop car crashes and "The Butcher" kills off patrolwoman's partner, she dives into a bombed out ghetto to find the killer and finds new forms of evil.

Overall: Film in many ways makes little sense considering "HP Lovecraft" is reading the book in 1934 but all the scenes are from 1990's. Huh? Film can be gory and generally the stories lack the cohesion of "Twilight Zone" and "Tales from the Crypt."

The 1st skit is based on the story "Rats in the Walls" but it's not very close at all to Lovecraft's original. Lovecraft wrote about a man who moves into the house once owned by ancestors but once inside, he finds out the house sits above a vast cavern with an underground city. Plus plenty of altars and graves to show that many people were killed and sacraficed. Plus, the rats that inhabit the house and the cavern have a taste for human blood and it turns out that the entire countryside would have preferred the house never been reopened and now that it's open, they will try and close it...forever!

The 2nd snippet, "The Cold" really only makes reference to the story it is based on "Cool Air." The story is about a tenant who befriends his upstairs neighbor and soon realizes that neighbor died 18 years ago but with the help of cold air, has been resurrected.

The 3rd is supposedly based on "Whisper in the Darkness" although others have said "Nameless City." Frankly neither story is too much like this movie snippet. But I could buy the association anyway...because I'd bet that the writers found a story on their own and decided to mold it into what they thought H.P. Lovecraft would have turned it into, had he been given the chance. But don't look much into either short story for a connection to this film.
