Bats (1999)

Dr. Casper is an expert with bats and when a local Texas couple is killed, she is called in. But she scoffs at the idea anyone could be killed by a bat, until the evil scientist Dr. McCabe lets her know what he’s been up to. But McCabe lost a few of his genetically enhanced animals and wants her and Sheriff Kimsey for help. But what may be 2 missing bats turns out to be thousands because they’ve passed on the virus to others and the town of Gallup soon “feels their pain.” The only way now to kill them s to find their lair and freeze them to sleep...before the US military blows Gallup, Texas off the face of the Earth.

Overall: Since when is a horror film rated PG-13? The film really tries to avoid any blood or gore and there is barely a hint of romance in the film. It is just trying to have killer bats attacking people, which they do quite well. The film shocked me in that the Evil Doctor is very open about his experiments, whereas in most films it is a giant government cover-up. Here the Doc is really open and could care less what others think. Basically I think a cover-up is more realistic and as a plot makes more sense and provides more drama. This film just simply lets the drama be the bats themselves and leaves the story out of it. Another interesting aspect is the military even being brought in. Basically the film is again trying to be as least dramatic as possible by adopting the plot of “Outbreak” – go with the military and let the experts try to save society before the military annihilates the town. Again, not a popular horror plotline. Dina Meyer stars in this as does Lou Diamond Phillips – guess his success of “La Bamba” has faded.
