Ceremony (1994)

Seems this college student, Sylvia, has an extra credit project she can't turn in. In the 600's A.D., a female angel objected that God had chosen humans over angels to give a soul and allow into heaven, and she became jealous. Well she was cast down from Heaven and Satan seeing her in a very weak state, took her to his side. In turn, she made it her life's goal to torture and kill humans. When the people of the day saw that, they captured her after one of her deadly rampages and got her placed in to a clockwork. It was set to open only upon the date of the apocalypse. Well predicting something 1400 years in advance is a bit tricky and so the apocalypse hasn't come but the day for the clock to open has. Sylvia bands some religion students together so they can battle this angel, should it pop out. After an elaborate religious ceremony, time comes due and the Angel is released. Then the killing starts.

Overall: Interesting little film that definitely wasn't as bad as I was expecting. It seemed to take some stuff from "Lair of the White Worm," including having a nude female antagonist. Nevertheless the biblical prophecies in this film, like most other religious films (Prophecy, Prince of Darkness, Seventh Sign) are made up. (These films create scripture and talk of it as being either hidden away or people took pacts not to tell. They are not true to what we know as the bible, but I find them fun to see what people can think of.) Film has an "Exorcist" quality to it but at times is just as campy as "Sleepaway Camp." Rent at your own risk.
