Spontaneous Combustion (1990)

Brian and Peggy are trying to make our planet safe for democracy and peace and that is why they are acting as human guinea pigs for the U.S.’s atomic weapons program. In 1955 they sat though a few tests of the “Samson Project” being exposed to high does of radiation. After giving birth, Peggy and Brian end up dead - by what some witnesses believe to be spontaneous human combustion. 30 some years later, their son, Sam, is ready for his birthday gifts. Except on this day, people start to die some fairly horrible deaths and the mystery of his birth starts to poke though. Soon, Sam realizes that his girlfriend, his ex-wife, and everyone around him were planted by the government and that everything he knows is a lie. Only though the help of a retired military nurse can Sam really learn the truth -- that he exceptional power for death and destruction and unleashed without some control, it could be the end of all mankind.

Overall: The film had some promise but the story is too filled with conspiracy to actually try to deal with one of the all-time famous urban legends. As much as a lizard could turn into Godzilla via atomic radiation, this film tries to get a man into a human blowtorch. But Brad Dourif is an exceptional actor (even if he is the voice of "Chucky"), and tends to pull his role off very well. All the other actors fail, including Bears Hall of Fame Linebacker Dick Butkus! The ending is all unsatisfying and I had hoped for more of climax on par with "Firestarter" - which is a hell of alot more believable.

          Comparison: Firestarter meets Truman Show
