This tale is of a murderous barber called Sweeny Todd. Just a normal barber who enjoys losing his customers so he can take their valuables. His undoing starts when a Mr. Mannheim visits and one day goes missing. Many have gone missing before, but Mannheim was a diamond dealer who owned money to an American corporation who has now sent their best investigator to look for the $50,000 in loot that seems to have gone missing. Ben Carlyle immediately starts tearing up the streets of London looking for the man, when all roads lead him to the barbershop of Sweeney Todd. Soon Sweeney must do something and seeks to limit the amount of people who ever saw the man alive. Mr. Todd has a co-conspirator, Mrs. Lovett, who makes tremendously delicious meat pies for all the London residents. But she stays in business because Mr. Todd keeps killing people - you figure out the connection! Soon Carlyle gets too close to a woman named Alice who happened to have as her guardian, one Mr. Sweeney Todd. Carlyle must fight his duty to save his employers and also himself. Meanwhile Mrs. Lovett continues to make a fortune and most of London isn’t interested in the truth - they just love to eat!
Overall: I had been hoping for more horror than it had but there sure is enough gore for everyone. Decent cast (Ben Kingsley and Campbell Scott) and some interesting plot twists - bottom line, make sure you have already eaten before seeing this film because you won’t want to afterwards. What amazes me most though, is that this story has fostered an award-winning musical. Something you'd want to take your kids too, right? Comparison: Ravenous meets Jack the Ripper |
