Blowback (1991)

- written April 2000

Inspector Morrell has lots of things on his mind: the execution of serial killer John Matthew Whitman, his ex-wife trying to bed him and a new partner, Detective Ricci. But after the execution of Whitman, a new killer has sprung up and is slowly killing residents of the lovely town of San Diego but using the same modus operandi as Whitman: killing them the exact way Catholic Saints were martyred. Soon Morrell and Ricci discover the sinister plot of this killer: kill all the jurors who convicted Whitman. Morrell must now do everything he can to save the city of San Diego and figure out the connection between Whitman and this new killer. But beware, the FBI has some secrets too and Morrell won’t arrest anyone without a fight. But was Whitman really killed and how does Morrell’s time as a priest really allow him to be an unbiased cop?

Overall: Really bad film that fails in many ways. The story is straight out of “Point of No Return,” with some “Seven,” “Resurrection,” and “Prophecy” thrown in for good measure. It also features Whitman falling off a 5 story building, back-first onto a parked car, and getting away without a scratch or a bruise. And seconds before when a police officer left the roof the same way, they died! Finally, the film was partially filmed in a building I work in, so you know they didn’t skim on scenery. Yes, that is the San Diego County Courthouse fileroom that Whitman enters and yes, that was the County Courthouse desk for desk. To see where I work, this movie can be enjoyable. Otherwise let Mario Van Peebles end his career silently!
