The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

Dr. Dennis Allen has been dispatched to Haiti in order to investigate the possibility of a drug that can make people zombies. The drug can paralyze you physically long enough so the authorities think you are dead but keeps you alive mentally. Then when it wears off, the conjurer who out =you under the drug, will now control your soul. Dr. Allen uses local Doctor, Marielle Duchamp, to help him search through the cities and countryside for this mystical drug and for Christophe Durant who is a living example of the effects. At first it is difficult to find out anything, because the country’s rulers also know voodoo and zombification and most citizens are too scared to help. But soon enough they find a local rogue, Louis Mozart who has visions of being famous beyond his wildest dreams. It is at this point that the head of the secret police wants to put a curb on any discoveries because he knows if the locals begin to show their power, them him and the government will fall. Allen ends up being zombified and must do anything to get himself and Marielle out of the control and away from the evil forces at work. But even back in the U.S., he isn’t safe. Allen must go back to Haiti and either conquer his fears or die trying!

Overall: Excellent film. Bill Pullman does a great job and the movie has some great imagery and cinematography. Although not really scary, the film nevertheless is essentially a true story. Haitians do believe in zombies and voodoo and there’s no doubt that medicines like this can exist even if we don’t necessarily know about them. Enjoy this film! Best movie line and you’ll know why if you see it:

"I want to hear you scream!"

Comparison: Medicine Man meets Night of the Living Dead
