Phantom of the Opera (1962)

- written July 2006

Summary: Lord Ambrose d'Arcy is trying to produce a nice financially-healthy opera and frankly, he’s starting to anger the Gods...well, the Phantom of the Opera House, that is. And it seems this Phantom is going out of his way to ensure the dear Lord, gets nothing accomplished. Finally it is with the bewitching of the female lead of his new opera, that all goes to hell…and even the Phantom will finally stand up for what he believes in.

Overall: I was not impressed with the movie. It tries to be too much like a play and musical with long signing scenes and I kept then hoping Michael Crawford or Robert Guillaume would jump out and sing “Music of the Night.” Instead, we have a burn victim who got screwed by Lord D’Arcy as our Phantom and our “phantom” becomes our “victim.” Film just didn’t work for me. Nice sets...nice acting by Michael Gough. Otherwise, skip it.
