H (2002)

Summary: Detectives Mi-yun Kim and her new partner Tae-hyun Kang, have been brought in to investigate a new strong of homicides involving pregnant women. Kim was involved in the last investigation which leads to a confession and her previous partner taking his own life. Once it becomes obvious this killer is copy-catting the other murders, Kang decides to take on the original mastermind. But these sessions only fuel the fire and no one seems to get any closer to a solution. That is...until they start investigating the killer’s shrink...now events will come to a conclusion so fast, not everyone will make it out of this alive!

Overall: The film should be titled “R” for “red-herring” or “W” for weird or even “U” for unique. But I’m not gonna tell you what “H” stands for...that’s giving it away. But frankly this film takes you all over the place and by the end, you’re gonna be shocked when you find out who did it and why. And you won’t be guessing correctly in advance.

A few things I do have to say about the film. Much of the plot is not unique. It’s basically melding “Silence of the Lambs” with “Seven” and “Copycat.” As you watch the film, you’re totally gonna find yourself comparing and contrasting. And with “Lambs,” you’re really gonna find the imprisoned killer less than convincing. I didn’t buy his performance and even had trouble with the “coldness” of the lead detective. I had different ideas on what I expected from their characters and the performances didn’t live up to them.

The ultimate ending/solution to the film does work. My initial reaction from the movie was “oh no way” and “you’re kidding, right?” But upon reflection and a 2nd viewing...I’m buying it now. This ending is why I might re-title the film to “U.” It’s different for sure, and something new for us Americans.

Finally...as much as the deleted scenes contain material which sorta hint towards the final result of the film…I think you need the alternate opening placed in the film. You needed to see more of our killer and more of his work to truly buy him in his role. But also, I wanted to see more from the deceased partner to Det. Kim. I wanted to see why he felt need to commit suicide and what he and Kim went though. The lack of this sorta made the film a little less cohesive for me.

Overall, it’s a film worth watching. Despite the flaws I found, it’s definitely worth it for the ending. It’s worth it to see how they complete this film. It’s almost worth it for the gore/effects...I’ve kept this to myself but only because I don’t want to give much away. If you find today’s film lacking…this film will wake you up.
