The Nest (1988)

Summary: The Sheriff has a bad roach problem at his house and soon realizes the entire island is brimming over with the little creatures. The problem is, these roaches have a taste for blood and they’re gonna eat everyone they can on the island.

Overall: The film ran into a “Catch-22” with it’s subject matter. Letting normal-sized roaches run around as you add bloody corpses and voice-overs to explain that they are bloodthirsty doesn’t work. No one can be scared of dying when a small roach scuttles across the floor. But at the same time, if you make these things bigger (such as with “The Queen,” that doesn’t really work either, because it looks fake and can’t be pulled off. So the film really has a lose-lose situation. The characters don’t get enough to do to truly pull off a story…we see the Sheriff and his girlfriend but the moment his ex returns from a 4 year absence, he’s sleeping with her in a moment, despite the fact he and the girlfriend seemed so happy together. And the Mayor looks evil at all times so when he decides he wants to be a good guy, it’s too unbelievable. And frankly, with blood-thirsty roaches on the loose, watching them chew into a phone line sorta becomes silly. It’s not an awful film, but just can’t keep you interested because too much ends up lacking.
