Summary: It is 2046 and something sinister has started killing people on Mars, at a research facility. A tactical response team gets beamed aboard and soon realize that there are creatures on this planet who want nothing more than to kill everyone alive. However its how these creatures got created that really becomes the problem.
Overall: I’m sorta torn with this film. When it debuted in theatres, I avoided it as being yet another video-game rip-off film that is just a waste of money. After reviewing it on DVD, I’m not sure I need to be that harsh. It is entertaining. Some nice, action, decent storyline, and some good effects. It’ll keep you busy. But...let’s get to the plot itself. Although the storyline is fine... interesting but not much more than that...it’s not the plot from the videogame. And that’s the biggest turn-off to anyone who knows of the videogame. As you’ll probably not forget, the facility, in the game, basically sits atop Hell and has more than enough Satanic subplots, etc. to keep you going. The film completely re-writes this and that is, disappointing. We also have the “First Person Shooter sequence” towards the end of the film. As it is used...I think it works. Nice transitions to and from and you can totally tell they put some big dollars into it. They did a good job and it’s really not bad. However...it looks pre-planned. It looks out of place given the film. It looks like it was meant to be in the film no matter what and for that reason, it looks silly. It’s like they made 90 minutes of fluff so they could use this 5 minute sequence. Overall...it’s a decent film but die-hards to the video-game probably won’t like it. And frankly...it’s such a dark film, you’d be lucky to truly notice anything happening anyway. Comparison: Resident Evil meets House of the Dead |
