The Cave (2005)

Summary: An ancient cave has been discovered underneath a monastery in Romania. Untouched by man, a few cave divers and their Romanian hosts lead them down into oblivion. But wait, it has been touched by man…in fact, they built the monastery to prevent creatures from escaping…and now the door is open.

Overall: Few thoughts on this film. I thought it had a lot of promise...but just failed to deliver.

Firstly...no “horror” films work when they are given a PG-13 rating. To get that, you’ve prob either really shredded the film as to content and plot or are treating your viewers as children unable to deal with the true reality of your story.

Second, the film has some nice ideas. Undiscovered country of sorts with the cave...very few films have cave scenes and you have lots of things you can do down there. And some really nice scenery.

But the problems come with the fact, with that scenery comes the possibility of losing the viewers...in your geography. Gets to a point where audience has no clue where the characters are in terms of the mountain, cave, etc. and it all seems silly when they magically pop out. Where is everything in relation to everything else? It just got “unbelievable” because I wanted to follow the plot and kept thinking...how realistic is all this?

But the major problem lies with the confused plot and weak acting. See, we have a lot of pretty people playing roles that in real life probably have less than glamorous people doing these jobs. But frankly, the number one problem with the film is…”It’s Pitch Black in a cave.” It was like they took same film, same roles and just moved it underground. And they never truly took advantage of the creatures...one scene has Jack squeezing through small opening only to find scorpion creatures on other side. We never see them again nor does Jack even acknowledge they exist, when speaking to others.

Just really seemed like they could have done more and didn’t.
