Summary: It is 1863, Alabama and a few nefarious bank robbers have gotten away with some gold. They already have a hideout in mind, although they’ve never visited it before. Problem is…the house has its own secrets and it’s gonna let anyone staying there until it gets pound of flesh as payment.
Overall: It’s an “ok” film. Some nice ideas…love the period they took from. Some nice authenticity too at times. So, good stuff there. The effects aren’t good though, especially during the bank robbery. They’re fake and obvious at that. Not sure I ever got into any of the characters being likeable so I wasn’t truly rooting for any outcomes. Made it a bit hard to be unhappy that there were ghosties trying to kill our main characters. I did like the scary bits when the kid’s faces went deformed and spooky. And the story behind it all was nice. I’m not sure the film was as clear as it should have been explaining the title and the creatures better. Many a folk on the net are still confused. And that’s not always a good thing. Watching the deleted scenes, I did think that despite the usual director complaints about “pacing” and the usual “blah, blah,” some of that stuff would have been nice. I think one scene involving the bank robbery being a little more “deadly” would have given our characters a little more backbone. Comparison: Ravenous meets Glory |
