Summary: Tim has always been afraid of the dark, afraid of closets, afraid of pretty much everything. And it sure doesn’t help that it all started when he saw his dad get abducted and killed by a mysterious “boogeyman” in his closet when he was 8. Now 15 years later, his mom has passed away and he must go back home to deal with everything. Including what demons may still lie in the house.
Overall: This film has been pummeled unmercifully across the internet and wherever else for it’s plot flaws. And I will say, there are holes, there are flaws. But this movie has some really good scares. It’s suspenseful and keeps the viewer occupied. For myself, I thought they clearly didn’t do enough with the character of the mother. She only got used in flashbacks and even then, never anything showing how bad kid’s life was that he had to live with his Uncle. In addition, they are never clear if the kid solely created “The Boogeyman” and if he’s responsible for all the other mayhem or not. And we get almost no scenes of Tim’s life since age 8…or how he got a girlfriend and survived this long. If he had created this “Boogeyman” as a child, how come it hasn’t haunted him ever since? And yes…those are huge questions. This isn’t “The Godfather” or “Citizen Kane” quality plot. No question. But it can provide good, quick scares. It’s entertaining. Just don’t focus too much on the plot. :) Now as to the deleted scenes…there’s some significant cuts from the film. There are 6 scenes on the dvd and first four are definitely needed. They include a scene where Tim tries to save his Uncle from being taken by the Boogeyman. In addition, in the film we see Tim sit in the chair voluntarily but the deleted scene has him duct-taping himself to the chair, only to have to get himself loose when all his precautions to bolt doors and windows have failed. Also, we find out that the backpack was really Tim’s. And finally, we have the connection between the scenes where Tim sees chimney dust to why he’s outside at the trash can when he discovers Frannie. That scene alone is 4 continuous minutes. The other 2 scenes involve Tim meeting with people at the work-party and his walk through the park. Neither of which advance the plot at all. Comparison: Darkness meets Darkness Falls |
