Summary: In the London of 1791, a popular attraction of the bourgeois is to go to Bedlam asylum to look at the imprisoned lunatics. When Mistress Bowen sees the awful way the lunatics are treated she tries to stand up and reform the system, but instead her master, Lord Mortimer and George Sims, the headmaster of the asylum, decide rather than allowing her to “rock the boat,” they have her committed.
Overall: The movie was interesting to show us the conditions of old-time asylums but only stands on it’s own to show us the tremendous abilities of Boris Karloff. Performances such as the one in this film should end any and all talk that he wasn’t good other than being “Frankenstein’s Monster.” Brilliant dialogue for his character and just such a witty tone he delivers the lines in. Best part of the movie is his. As for the story, it’s more of a history lesson as it focuses very little on the history of any characters. It’s about Bowen and her attempts to bring order to a disorderly system. Comparison: Girl interrupted meets Dangerous Liaisons |
