Hellraiser V: The Inferno (2000)

- written January 2004

Detective Joe is trying to have an ordinary day: investigate a brutal murder, say hi to his daughter, and sleep with a prostitute. But he discovers this neat little puzzle box which when opened, opens Joe's mind to pure terror! Everyone who he investigates when trying to discover the secrets of this box, ends up dying around him and his fellow cops can't help but think he's involved. But Joe is seeing some weird demons who get their jollies by torturing people. Joe needs to stop by them before they stop his heart!

Overall: If you read my prior reviews you'll know my view on this film. But here it is anyway: "What the hell?" Pinhead is barely in this one and where as the box is featured prominently the story pretty much has no connection to the prior films. The writers chose the box, the hooks and a few choice cenobites but left everything else behind. There's no horror nor suspense and it makes reference to "The Engineer," which the book alluded to as the "end all be all" of Hell. But the film more or less makes him as just another human with a cool name. The film really ignores the prior films trying to go in an opposite direction. It sure did, and that is not what it should have done. Basically part 4 ended the series, if it didn't as Lemarchand accomplished it then why is there a part 5. The film should have answered that question before proceeding - hell even a crap film like Alien 4 at least found some answer to why their shouldn't have been a part 4 (DNA). But the film just is really about a cop with a drug problem who goes nuts on his own paranoia. Hell, it really could have been like a sequel to "Angel Heart." And basically what was Pinhead doing? Without being a complete spoiler, since when does Pinhead need to be a good guy? Part 3 royally screwed up the aura of this leader of Hell by pulling the man away from the demon but now he's all "cutsy" and plays a "moral savior." Huh? If I want this crap from my horror films, I'll stick with the German films!

          Comparison: Scarred City meets Rush
