Jason is back again and he's now stalking Tommy Jarvis. Tommy has been so traumatized by his murder of Jason that years later he is in and out of mental institutions. Tommy does dream of a time after part 4 where he visits Jason's grave and 2 grave diggers end up dying due to Jason's wrath. But for now Tommy must deal with his new surroundings and the fact that after his death, Jason comes to life. Jason begins to stalk the other inmates and soon all hell has broken loose. Will Tommy survive again or will he finally become a victim?
Overall: No doubt the worst of all the films in the series for the fact that the real Jason is absent. This films ranks up there with "Halloween 3" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre: New Generation" as being a bastardization of the real series and using the name to get viewers. The mask is different from the prior film (but why not, its not really Jason) but the film is essentially the same. Little shots of Jason, quick deaths, no action, no character development, and the obviously problem that people are dying way too fast for being as far away as they are. Fails for same reason "Urban Legend" does: the only way you could kill that fast is by driving to each murder, and even then that would be too implausible. There are no connections to the Lake, to the camps or to the prior 4 films, outside of Tommy. Feels weird that after letting Ginny and Chris go free after trying to kill him, Jason only goes after Tommy. Seems sexist. But again the film uses the character of Tommy to reel in viewers but Jason and Tommy don't connect. Death Count = 20, Overall = 62. (written 1999) 12/26/04 - Ok, so I got the DVD box set for X-mas this year and I took the time to start watching everything. The Chronicles feature of this film has bunches of interviews regarding the making of this film. Well there were no interviews with anyone connected to the making of this film - all with actors but no one defending the making this film. Corey Feldman actually says he thought this film was a good idea...but would rather have another "Friday" starting where part 4 ended. Well, Corey...it's been too long to try your version but frankly, you sold out doing this one! My Title: Friday the 13th Part 5: A New Jason 06/23/2009: So I've seen the movie more than a few times, including owning the original box set. However this is the new Deluxe Edition DVD. We get the 5th installment of the "Lost Tales" which is again 6-7 minutes of more footage designed to replicate the original films with victims being chased. This time we have a documentary of "New Beginnings" basically a nice chat with those involved with this film about making it and dealing with fan backlash about making a 5th film. Very fascinating. Finally we have the "Crystal Lake Massacres Revisited, Part 2" which is a continuation of the mockumentary designed for fans. They put a lot of time into it and it was cool again.
