Fatal Charm (1990)

- written April 2000

Valerie can’t seem to find any high school boys interesting or worthy of a date. But just recently, she has found somebody worth caring about; accused serial killer Adam Brennan. Her home life is fairly dysfunctional: her single mother is having an affair with a married man, which the town knows about, and he is always coming on to her and engaging in non-consensual pleasures with her. Oh yeah, the mother’s boss, Sheriff Childs, seems powerless to stop anything. Val tries to be normal by dating the Sheriff's son, James, but when Adam escapes from prison, he goes straight for his pen-pal, and she lovingly obliges. But for all his pleadings of innocence he is guilty of some things, and that is the insatiable need for sex and violence. Perhaps Valerie is enamored by his good looks, but when he shows his real self, she will have to fight for her life or become another of his statistics.

Overall: Well the film does include some Sinning Room Legends in James Remar and Andrew Robinson. Film is fairly weak all-around but does give some insight into why some women like and sometimes even marry convicted killers. Maybe they are deranged or overly susceptible to the need for someone special. So this film can be interesting into delving into that topic but overall the film isn’t very good.

Comparison: Naked Gun 33 1/3 meets People’s Court
