The Evil Dead (1981)

- written April 1999

5 young adults, including our hero, Ashley (played by Bruce Campbell), are on their way to some fun in the woods with plans on staying at this old cabin. They arrive to find it looking creepy but they decide they can deal with it. After a bit of looking around in the basement, they find an old book. It is written in a weird language and has a creepy looking face on it too. They also find a tape recorder and they all sit to listen. The narrator of the tape is a scientist who found the book, called the "Book of the Dead," in some Kandarian ruins. It is bound in human flesh and written with human blood. The narrator goes on to recite incantations which would reanimate demons which could possess a human being. The 5 are wary about the whole thing and decide to quit hearing the incantations at just the wrong time. One girl ready for bed decides to take a quick romp into the forest, wearing practically nothing. For anyone who thought women wearing scantily clad clothing are "asking for it," well this girl does - she gets raped by a tree. After escaping with her life, the 5 hear the rest of the tapes and end up summoning more demons. The demons also possessing some of the cabin inhabitants - the only way to defeat the demons is to use bodily dismemberment (which you know is just a warning for the gore yet to come). Will Ashley make it through or will he have to decapitate and dismember all his friends, including his girlfriend?

Overall: This is one of the true classics in horror films. Very good film and even a bit creepy at times too. Watch out though, there is a fair amount of gore. Watch it to see why Bruce Campbell will become a cult icon. But really, I never though a cabin which could look so small from the outside could be so big on the inside.
