Interview with Emily Haack

- written June 14th, 2009

- Emily Haack is the star of "Scrapbook". Anyone looking for more info on Emily or her films, can visit her at her IMDB page.

Q: Emily, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?

A: I met Tommy Biondo in 1997 and he introduced me to Eric Stanze and Jeremy Wallace. We all immediately hit it off as friends and I, being in film school at the time, was very interested in what they were doing at Wicked Pixel Cinema! I already knew Jason Christ from college.

When Tommy was writing Scrapbook, he asked me if I would want to play his lead character, Clara…and the rest is history.

Q: Would you please explain your acting role in "Scrapbook"?

A: Clara was my first acting role in a movie but I was extremely psyched to play the part. I felt close to Clara and I think Tommy wrote some of her with me in mind. He knew me well and he believed that I could portray her the way he wanted her portrayed. I can only hope that I did that because up until my character, Crystal in the upcoming “Ratline”, Clara has been my favorite role I have had.

Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one's product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about the film.

A: The only problems I have really had with anyone's negative review of Scrapbook is when they refer to it as "porn" or "torture porn" and when they claim that we are condoning violence towards women. Both claims are asinine, in my opinion. Firstly, there is nothing sexy about Scrapbook…and if you are getting off on it like you do "real" porn, then you have bigger problems! Also, there is no way that I would consciously condone violence towards women. Having been down that unfortunate road, I am an advocate of strong, powerful female characters! That being said, violence and hatred does exist and we shouldn't shy away from it and pretend it doesn't. That's part of what we do at Wicked Pixel, we show what some are afraid to think about.

Q: If there were one part of the filming that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?

A: This might seem strange, but the scene that I was most nervous about shooting was the dialogue sequence Tommy and I have in the kitchen right before he slaps me. I hadn't ever really done dialogue before, so I was super green! I, hopefully, have gotten better since then, but that is still the least favorite of my performances in Scrapbook.

Being closed up in the garbage can was pretty nerve-racking as well since I'm pretty claustrophobic. I had to pretend I was somewhere else during the shooting of those scenes!

Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?

A: After the shooting the first rape scene [which happened to be the very first day of shooting!], I knew that we were going on a crazy journey with this film. Eric & Tommy weren't fooling around; they were intent on making this disturbing, shocking, in your face movie. And I believe we all succeeded in doing that.

Q: Looking back, I see that you’ve also appeared in a few other films. Can you tell me a little about each film and your experience with it? First, “Savage Harvest 2.” And did you see the first film before shooting the sequel?

A: I did see the original “Savage Harvest” many years before the sequel was even a gleam in Jason Christ’s eye. So, when the idea of “Savage Harvest 2” was brought up and I was asked to play Ashley I was very excited! I love to do physical acting and stunts and wield weapons, so I knew this was going to be a fun shoot! It was also a freeze-your-nips-off cold shoot! We shot through the fall and winter and were outside for the majority of the time…with very thin layers on. But I wouldn’t have traded it for the world. It is always hard for sequels to live up to the originals, but I think Jason did a fantastic job with SH2 and it turned out to be a really good film.

Q: How about “I Spit On Your Corpse”?

A: Oh lordy…I don’t think I will ever live this movie down! But seriously, at the time we shot “I Spit…” I was living in Los Angeles and I came home for a few days for the shoot. I was itching to be in another project and Eric had a quota he needed to fill, so this movie was born. Plus, there were some overseas investors that wanted certain elements included in the script, so we conceded and went for it! It was pretty much an exploitation film, not to be taken too seriously. But, I had a good time on the shoot…there was never a dull moment, that’s for sure!

Q: And also “Deadwood Park”?

A: I had a very small part in “Deadwood Park”. I played a WWII nurse who is tending to the Reverend after he gets bitten. So, I didn’t get to do a lot of acting in the project but I was the 1st Asst. Director for the first half of the shoot. My father died in the middle of our production schedule, so I wasn’t as involved in the last half of the shoot. But I was very pleased with how DWP turned out! Eric did a phenomenal job with his camerawork and editing, Jeremy showed his Producer chops by getting us the gorgeous locations, and William Clifton did a great job acting. I hadn’t seen him in a feature film lead role since the original Savage Harvest, so that was exciting to watch.

Q: Finally, “Ratline”?

A: “Ratline” was an awesome shoot! Eric and Jason wrote a very creative, very dark story and I was so excited to play the part of Crystal. I felt like there were parts of me in Crystal’s character, so I tried to bring those out. She is a good person who makes some bad decisions and has to face the consequences of those decisions. I also loved working with Jason in a lead role. We had worked opposite each other before in a short film called “How Was Your Day?” but this was the first time in a feature we had played leads together. I was very impressed with his performance! He went somewhere I didn’t know he could go! We are all very excited about “Ratline”. It’s going to kick some serious ass.

Q: What's next for you? What else does 2009 hold for you?

A: Since principal shooting on Ratline is complete, I am looking forward to working on another project! Wicked Pixel will be making the convention circuit to promote Ratline. But as of right now, I don't have any projects on hand.

Q: If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?

A: Hopefully, I would be in pre-production on the next Wicked Pixel Cinema project that has been financed by a studio! That would be ideal! Eric and Jason Christ are so creative and have so many storylines and ideas in their heads that I think we'll be busy for a long time to come!

Q: Is there any movie director or producer you really want to work for one day?

A: Oh sure! It would be a dream come true to work with Darren Aronofsky, Woody Allen, the Coen Brothers, Robert Rodriguez, or Sam Raimi! [hint, hint!]

Q: Are there certain types of films you enjoy doing? What do you look for when picking projects?

A: I would love to do a comedy. I think that would be a blast! But I do love doing the movies where I get to play the badass. That's always fun!

Q: You’ve appeared in a few films, but have also done some modeling too, correct? Can you tell me where we may have seen you in those various projects?

A: I haven't really done any major modeling, only stuff for Wicked Pixel. I would like to do more, but I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to it right now.

Q: If you could choose only one type of art (modeling, movies, etc) to continue working on, what would you choose?

A: I would definitely choose acting in movies. I feel so at home in front of the camera. I have learned a lot in these past 11 years working with Wicked Pixel and I hope I never have to quit!

Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?

A: Well, a couple of things about me that people might not know are that my husband and I are owners of a clothing store here in St Louis called FiFi’s and also that I am currently in Veterinary Technician school! I have a job at a local Animal Hospital and have always wanted to work with animals.

FiFi’s is a rockabilly/punk/tattoo-inspired clothing & jewelry store for men and women. We bought it last year and trying to keep it alive in this crazy economy! You can check us out right now on Myspace [myspace.com/fifis].

Q: Finally...this is an "Obscure Horror Movie" website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on dvd, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven't seen?

A: I think the last horror movie I watched was Saw V on DVD. I am big fan of the Saw movies; I think they are very creative. And a favorite obscure horror film of mine would be King of the Zombies. My husband showed it to me and I thought it was hilarious and great! Mantan Moreland steals the show.

Q: Thank you very much for doing this.

A: Well, thank you so much for your support of independent cinema! WE appreciate it!
