Dr. Tarr’s Torture Dungeon/The Mansion of Madness (1972)

- written August 2006

Summary: Gaston LeBlanc is a famous journalist, interested in documenting the goings-on of an infamous sanitarium. Operated by the brilliant Dr. Maillard, the asylum has adopted some unique "soothing" treatments for its patients. No bars, no confines and everyone magically gets better. Or do they?

Overall: Based on the Edgar Allen Poe short story “The System of Dr. Tarr and Prof. Fether,” the film does a decent job of holding up to the general plot. It does though get quite weird, psychedelic and downright confusing however. There’s a lot going on in the film and I’d be lying if I told you I understood everything. But it’s sorta interesting in a weird way. It’s worth a viewing.
