Interview with David Dorn

- David Dorn is the editor and co-director of "Empty House." Anyone looking for more info on David or his films, can visit him at his Lost in the Fog Productions page.

Q: Mr. Dorn, can you please give my readers a brief background on yourself.

A: Sure. I was born on March 30th 1987 with my twin brother Russell. Ever since we were kids we have been into filming. In fact as kids we would write crazy scripts about aliens taking over the world. While having our mom control the camera we would both act out the whole scripts. We started slowing down on filming going into Middle school and towards the end of high school because we had to focus on other things such as our education and friends. However, senior year of high school came around and we met a young woman by the name of Jaclyn (Jax) Davis who was also really into film. That’s when the three of us started writing and making short films together. After doing a few of our shorts we wanted to take it up a notch and make an actual film. This is where Empty House comes into the picture.

Q: Can you explain how you guys first got into the movie business?

A: I don’t really know it just sort of happened. We had a family camera, which, mixed with boredom caused us to start making goofy little movies.

Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one’s product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about this film.

A: Empty House is a no budget film. By no budget I mean it, all we spent was 70 dollars for a hotel room in Grass Valley, California for two days. Also it’s our first actual big film so we were mostly using it as an exercise for some of our bigger films coming up. Don’t expect a Sun Dance winning film out of Empty House. However, It’s an enjoyable movie if you’re just looking for something new and exciting to watch.

Q: How did you come up with the idea of "Empty House"?"

A: The idea of Empty House actually came from Jaclyn (Jax) Davis. She is the writer and main director. Russell and myself were more of a backup if something wasn’t going right. We did have a part in writing the script but in the end it all came down to how Jax wanted to write it. As for how it actually came around, we just wanted to make a horror/comedy film and this was our movie to do that.

Q: If there were one part of the film that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?

A: Finding reliable actors/actresses was defiantly a very difficult part in making Empty House. Some of our original actresses ended up not being able to travel to California so we had to make it so we could combine the actual house in Grass Valley with another house here in Reno. That way they could do there parts here and we could just splice the two houses together. In the end we found out that it’s not easy doing that.

Also as I previously stated using two houses was difficult so Location was also a big issue for us.

Q: Was there any one day, one moment where you just knew the film would work they way you thought it could?

A: I myself would have to say when it was finished (ha ha). You never really know how your film is going to end up till everything comes together and you can see the final piece in action. However, after hearing the audio Ryan Baker was putting to the film, that would have to be the closest moment to when I knew it was going to work.

Q: Since finishing work on “Empty House,” what have you been working on?

A: We actually are starting work on a documentary on the life of a Transgender man and what he has to go through to convert from a woman’s body to a mans. You can actually check it out on our website at this address: http://www.lfproductions.com.

Besides that we are about to also start on a movie written by Russell Dorn (My brother) called Vintage Hearts. You can also check this out at our site.

Q: What’s next for you? If you and I were to talk 1 year from today, what do you think would be on your plate at that time?

A: Honestly I do not know. I’m going to have to say probably the above movies and maybe a few smaller films. But both of the films above will take a few years to complete.

Q: Is there any actor you really want to work with one day? Someone that you look up to?

A: There is actually one actor I would really like to work with. He was in the Korean film “Oldboy” his name is Min-sik Choi. But in all honestly Id really rather work with the director of Oldboy (Ha Ha).

Q: What are your aspirations and goals in the movie industry? Box Office blockbusters? Films that anyone can watch? Something else?

A: As of now we would just really like to focus on films anyone can watch and get a hold of easily. We will be working our way up to Blockbuster hits, someday! But for now we are just trying to get enough funds to make a movie that when finished we can say. “Oh yeah this is the one that’s going to make it all the way.”

Q: Can you name a film that my visitors probably haven’t seen, that you think has either been an influence in your work or just feel is a “can’t miss” film?

A: Actually I’ve seen a few good ones recently.

1. Oldboy
2. Lady Vengeance
3. Running Scared (2006)
4. Children of Men (2007)

Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?

A: I’m currently a student at the University of Nevada Reno. And even though there is no film program I’m still trying my best to make great films with Russell and Jax.

Q: Finally...this is an “Obscure Horror Movie” website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on DVD, etc? How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven’t seen?

A: The last horror film I saw was called “Feast” and it was a Comedy/Horror film kind of like Empty House in a way. And a horror film that’s good that many probably haven’t seen. Hmm, Id have to say a really good horror film is “The Audition” everyone should check it out.

Thank you very much for doing this.
