- Devanny Pinn has appeared in a few movies, including "12/24" and "The Lonely Ones". Anyone looking for more info on Devanny or her films, can visit her at her IMDB page or her website.
Q: Devanny, can you explain how you first got into the movie business?
A: By accident actually. I was planning on studying musical theater when I moved to Arizona to do my senior year of high school and start college. I began looking at theater auditions when arrived to get involved in the performing arts community and a friend told me they were going to audition for a movie that was filming locally. They dragged me along and convinced me to audition for it, just for the experience. I had no headshot, no resume and no experience. I performed a monologue on the spot from my favorite movie and both the director and casting associates looked at me the whole time like I was an idiot. I was sure I bombed, but had fun and didn't think anything of it. I actually got called back for the lead and eventually offered the role. It turned out I was exactly what the director had in mind for the role, that film was The Lonely Ones, and it turned out to be exactly the part that I needed to introduce me to the horror world. I had the time of my life, and from there other offers surfaced. I always loved horror films, but I discovered my "blood lust" on that set, and knew that this is what I was meant to be doing.
Q: Would you please explain your acting role in "Orgy of Blood"?
A: You know, I only did a cameo in this film. It was kind of an audition for both me and the director to see if we would work well together.. I met Creep Creepersin at Fangorias Weekend of Horrors, while appearing with Troma. He had been interested in collaborating on some films and I had heard very promising things about his work. He was finishing up his latest project "Orgy of Blood" and invited me to do a scene at the end. The film is awesome! It really pushes some boundaries and I love that. My role is definitely something I have never done before. that's all I'm going to say about it, but I guarantee that my fans will be very satisfied. Its supposedly a favorite among those who have seen the film and one of those scenes that you can put on repeat and be fully entertained- so go check it out.
Q: Knowing how movie reviews may skew the perception of one's product, give us in your own words what you want people to know about the film.
A: Well, like with most things reviews have been positive and negative. a lot of times what one critic will find brilliant about my work, the next will tear me to shreds for. Anytime an artist puts themselves out there, you have be prepared for anything. Every one is going to have an opinion and its not always going to be in your favor. However, the opinions that actually matter to me are the ones that all are about horror, and they almost always have my back. When you see my name attached to a film you will immediately know its B Horror because that's all that I do. Many actors are all over the place- you see them in horror flicks and then in a comedy then on some cheesy teen sitcom. I have committed to horror because that's what moves me. I think my fans appreciate that I understand them. Most of the people who view and review my films already follow our genre, and respect for our industry. So when I get feedback it really means a lot to me. I've been very fortunate to overall have the support of fans and critics. If I want everyone to know one thing about my films, its that they are made with passion, purely for the love of horror.
Q: If there were one part of the filming that was more difficult than you expected, what would that be? Getting a costume to work? Appearing in a certain scene? Certain lines?
A: There most definitely was. Unfortunately, I can not talk about it without spoiling my scene. I know that after it comes out I am going to have a lot of questions to answer about it, so I will hold off on that for now.
Q: Looking back, I see that you’ve also appeared in other films. Can you tell me a little about each one and your experience with it? First, “Piranha 3D”?
A: Piranha. Well, I walked off the set of Orgy of Blood to go shoot yet another cameo in Piranha 3-D. I’m playing a contestant in a wet t-shirt contest during spring break just before everyone gets ripped apart by hungry fish. It was a bunch of Playboy playmates and me, so I am pretty easy to spot. Our bouncing boobs will be in 3-D so just look for the flat chic. My modeling agent actually set this one up and I was not sure if I wanted to do it because it was a big blockbuster film and that's not really my interest. Obviously, I ended up taking the role and deciding it was a learning experience. And it was, but not in the way I expected. I do not know how much detail I can go into, but I will just say that it was not my favorite set. I did enjoy working under Alex Aja, I’m a fan of The Hills Have Eyes. Vhing Rames and Elizabeth Shue were pretty awesome also.
Q: How about “12/24”?
A: This is b horror at its finest and film I am proud to have been involved with. It is the first ever holiday zombie flick and actually is premiering on the east coast this month. Stars the infamous Tiffany Shepis, Scott Davis, WCW's Maestro, and yours truly. I wasn't sure what to expect at first because it was a smaller newer company in PA and they were flying me out to film in the middle of no where. I honestly didn't know when I came out if they had any idea what they were doing, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find out how talented Gargoyle Entertainment is. The film has been getting a ton of press and has a huge following locally and its starting to spread. I have very high expectations for it. Watch for it at festivals this fall.
Q: How about “The Lonely Ones”?
A: Like I said this was my first film, and its currently the only one that's available to rent or buy internationally at this point. I think I have grown a lot as an actress since this film, but am very grateful for it. I learned so much being on that set. The poor crew probably thought I was a diva because I was constantly questioning everything they did, but I took everything in. We filmed for a month on location in the woods of northern Arizona. To this day, my character Tifa, is one of my favorite characters ever written in a low budget film. I don't want to spoil it too much for anyone who has not seen it. But there was so much depth to this role and so much to develop, it was an actors dream. While I enjoy a lot of the stereotypical parts that are often offered in horror, it was really great to see a character with such detailed history and background. It was the role I needed to really put me on the map. Reviews for this were very mixed. Many people originally attacked me with bad acting. Fortunately, a lot of them thought about it and watched the film again with greater detail and then voiced that I nailed it. I knew what I planned for Tifa was very risky, but I spent a lot of time with the role and decided to go for it. Overall people really supported my choices, and it lead to my Scream Queen nomination. I wish the budget had been larger for this film because David Michael Quiroz Jr. really did some amazing writing. a lot of things got overlooked or underplayed due to budget restrictions. But that was also part of the challenge and part of the fun. I think everyone was happy with the finished product.
Q: Is there any movie director or producer you really want to work for one day?
A: Well, I have worked for Tromas company as a spokesmodel, but I’m really hoping to get attached to one of their features. Lloyd Kaufman is a good friend of mine and like most horror fans, I really admire his work. We have been chatting about a couple of projects, and I would love to be involved with his films, especially the Toxie franchise.
Also any and all of the Masters of Horror.
Q: What do you look for when picking projects?
A: I like professional sets, with lots and lots of gore, shock value, fresh concepts or twists and a character that has dimension. a lot of times the of reason I accept or reject a project is due to the people involved and their vision. I like to work with people who are passionate about making art and have really put their all into their film. If it stands out to me, then I know it will to someone else.
Yet, I have agreed to do some projects in the past that I really did not feel were that special and was not that excited to be involved with. But the directors were so motivated and enthusiastic about their ideas that the energy became addicting.
That being said, I get tons of scripts sent to me and a lot of times there is errors all over the place, they haven't put any real thought into the characters or dialog. there is no realistic plan regarding the budget, locations, effects- basically they got excited to make a movie and kind of want to figure out things as they go along. that's fine, but I consider myself a professional: this is my career, my love and my life. It is ok to be a beginner, or to be exploring the filmmaking process. I do not know a single person who will tell you they don't continue to learn on every movie they make, but that doesn't mean you take the process any less seriously.
Also, if you send me a script and my character has two lines, starts to make out with her boyfriend in the car, runs upstairs away from the killer, stops to take a shower, then trips and dies... don't even bother.
Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?
A: I enjoy the sickest, most disturbing things you can think of. I look for it to watch and to make. Generally people think they have me all figured out upon meeting me, however, most people do not know that I am actually a dedicated practicing Christian. Religion is a large part of my life and I have also taken a vow of celibacy. Obviously this is an interesting and very unusual element for a horror actress. I have a more modern approach to my walk with God, instead of repressing my demons, I embrace them. My love for all things horror is a release for me and I like to think it balances my soul. It also allows me to portray a very convincing vulnerable victim, because I literally am the innocent virgin. Critics have repeatedly commented on my "very real reactions", and now you know why that is. I like to take on a character, not act like them. I've had the police called 7 different times over the course of my horror career. Recently, they entered armed to the barn were filming in and found me restrained and bloody. The director had to show them footage to convince them I was screaming for a movie and not because they kidnapped me. Also one set during a torture scene, we had to stop production because a member of the crew was watching my performance and threw up. Poor girl wouldn't come near me or the killer and ended up having to sit out the duration of filming. It was the biggest compliment I ever got.
