Summary: Xenobiologist Helen Benson is taken from her home by military escort to a top-secret briefing of various scientists. They are informed about an object traveling at very high speed on a collision course with the Earth. As they prepare for impact, the object slows down and lands in Central Park. As they watch, a figure in a cocoon emerges with a giant robot as well. Soon enough, they come to realize that Klaatu’s mission is to wipe humanity from the face of the Earth, his people considering humanity too selfish and destructive in their ways to act responsibly towards the fragile planet. Only way to survive is for Helen to try to persuade him that humanity is worth saving and that people can change their ways.

Overall: Although a decent remake, it’s not as powerful as the original film. Although granted, it’s easier 50 years later to see the impact of our foolishness back then has now. The film works because of the awesome special effects. Some nice performances but needed to be more concise at parts (such as with the Chinese man at the diner). Overall, definitely worth the effects alone!

Comparison: The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) meets The Day after Tomorrow
