Day of the Dead (1985)

- written January 2001

The Earth is now plagued with Zombies and only handfuls of living people remain and it is in an underground bunker in Florida. The survivors though can't seem to realize what joy the have left in their lives because they are constantly battling with each other and of course the zombies themselves are out looking for food. The survivors must battle the army personnel, the scientists and the bleeding hearts (essentially everyone) in order to figure out a way to solve the world's problem, without ensuring the living human race doesn't go extinct.

Overall: So with the release of "Land of the Dead," I've decided to re-watch and re-review Romero's films. Despite giving this film yet another chance, it just doesn't get the job done. The first 2 films were chock full of social commentary. At the very least the film analyzes what makes us human and what makes us die. So humanizing the zombies or trying to control I guess could look as something humans try to do with any species we don't understand: make them like us. But frankly, this film can't throw any more "gobbledy-gook" of social satire because it still has to follow the first 2 films and Romero has run himself into a corner on what's left to show. So we don't get the same stuff as the last film but obviously Romero answered the criticism of the prior 2 films in that he chose to expand on the characters. However he also went overboard this time. The film is all about talking and arguing and yelling and more talking. Little action exists in this film but when it does, you'll enjoy what you do see. I think Romero suffered from Sugar Ray Leonard's disease: when you out go out, go out on top. Leonard overstayed his retirement and Romero never should have followed up "Night of the Living Dead" because everything since has been a waste of money.

Comparison: Swimming with Sharks meets Zombi 2
