Dark Water/Honogurai mizu no soko kara (2002)

- written March 2006

Summary: Yoshimi Matsubara has just divorced from her husband and is going through custody proceedings involving her daughter Ikuko. She’s moved into a new apartment which seems so ideal at first but soon learns the terrifying truth. A young girl named Mitsuko disappeared few years back and she used to live above Yoshimi’s apartment. As time goes on, a water stain appears above Ikuko’s bed and eventually water starts to drip through. Seems some very unholy things are occurring in the vacant apartment above and when even Yoshimi starts to see ghosts, nothing good can come from this. But can Yoshimi save her daughter when it appears only one of them will make it out of the building alive?

Overall: I was a tinge disappointed when watching this film. I think I built this up with all the hype, a little more than I should have. I guess as much as I loved the atmosphere, story and acting, it wasn’t that scary. I enjoyed the ending though as well as the twist in the elevator between Mitsuko and Yoshimi. But again...not that scary. But well worth a watching anyway.
