Summary: A countdown of the decade's scariest horror films...in order:
12. The Strangers 11. Final Destination 10. The Orphan 9. The Descent 8. Hostel 7. 30 Days of Night 6. Cloverfield 5. 28 Days Later 4. The Mist 3. Saw 2. Paranormal Activity 1. The Ring Overall: So normally, I don’t review “tv specials” since there’s plenty of Spike TV and the sorta horror special…scariest movie moments etc. to choose from. But in this instance, since it was recent and sorta a hit/miss special, and with the New Years and our need for a good “List,” I figured, “sure, why not.” So above, I listed the “winners” in the top 13 scariest U.S. films of the last decade. My thoughts…good thing it was only a list of films form the United States since most of the truly scariest films, aren’t from America. Throw in any of “The Grudge” or “Ring” films, or French films “Martyrs” or “Sheitan” or ‘Rec” and they’d beat American films, easily. And a list without “Audition” isn’t a complete list! Also, the list was more about the “major market” films from 2000-2010 and skipped perhaps the straight to DVD films, such as “She’s Crushed,” “Frayed,” “Dead Girl” and “Teeth.” I’ll be happy to disagree with the list as it is since I’d argue no way “The Mist” makes my top 13…”Strangers” has to be moved up, a lot! The “American version of “The Ring” can’t beat “Paranormal Activity” for me. Hell, I’d argue for pure realism alone, “Open Water” should be in the top 10 of anyone’s list. I think the list /show would have been better to have been broader. We gotta stop creating lists to make us Americans feel better about our films. I’d dare ya to create a “scariest films on the last decade” list that had any American film on the top. “REC,” “Audition,” “Martyrs,” “Sheitan” should be top 4-5 easily…followed by a few more Japanese films, and maybe throw in “Paranormal Activity” or “Hostel,” or “28 Days Later” towards the end of the top 10.
