Carrie 2: The Rage (1999)

- written August 2006

Summary: Rachel is a teenager just trying to get through each day until she’s old enough to leave her foster parents behind. Unfortunately her friend Lisa, commits suicide one day after Lisa’s boyfriend dumped her quite embarrassingly. Rachel is trying to figure out what happened while also getting wooed by own of the popular football players. But one party never killed anyone to attend, right?

Overall: For the longest time I was quite unhappy with this film’s existence. I’ve avoided it on purpose and finally, for long enough. I will say that although they tossed in Amy Irving and gave us a teeny connection to part 1 (Carrie’s father), the film did try to be its own film. It’s not a copy at Rachel is quite different, treated different and eventually has good experiences with her beau. However the film does tend to get you more to assume connections to the first film, than actually create them. And frankly, there just wasn’t enough here. It just really wanted to be a remake. What made the first film great were the characters of Carrie and her mother. That made the film work. You knew Carrie was a ticking time bomb and when she went off, no viewer was either surprised or unhappy about it. Carrie was essentially “persona non-grata.” This film contrives everything between Rachel and everyone else and frankly, her life in comparison isn’t too bad. And that’s why this film just doesn’t work. And the fact that her foster family disappears for over an hour, confirms the film was just “not ready for primetime.”
