- Bobbie "Bloody Mary" Weiner is a makeup effects artist who has worked on films such as "Titanic" and "Pumpkinhead 2." Anyone looking for more info on Bobbie or her website, can visit her at http://www.dearbloodymary.com!
Q: Hi Bobbie, can you explain a little bit about yourself.?
A: I’m a special effects makeup artist out of Los Angeles. That’s my specialty. The first film I did was “Pumpkinhead 2.” And whatever they asked me to do on that one, I was willing to do. That’s where I got the nickname “Bloody Mary” that first night. Then I went on to do “titanic” and made frozen dead bodies for that. Today we actually manufacture and make makeup for the film industry, Halloween makeup for the “Hot Topic Stores” all over the country.
Q: And how did you first get into the movie business?
A: I went to makeup school in Hollywood 17 years ago. They used to ask people in our class, “There’s a movie this weekend, and would they need a makeup artist.” They did this for music videos too. And I took every job, every job they had, didn‘t matter if I got paid or not. Then for “Pumpkinhead 2”, they called and said “Bobbie, they need a gopher on the set of “Pumpkinhead 2…they’re paying $35 a night.” It was a 15 hour night and I said “sure.” I worked one night and then they asked me to stay on the next 3 weeks. They said it was $100, I took it. It was $100 for 3 weeks of work, I took it and have never stopped working.
Q: Have you seen “Pumpkinhead 2”? What do you think of it all these years later?
A: (laughs) I can’t believe what a following it has. When I go to a convention or I speak at a college, I ask “How many people saw Titanic” and like 98-99 percent of the room raises their hand.” When I ask them “How many have seen Pumpkinhead 2” and there’s always 10-20 guys who raise their hand and clap. It’s always on tv during October for Halloween.
Q: Can you tell me what you did for the film “Titanic” and How you got that job?
A:
I got that job from one of my interns who came over to this country from England who did hair. Does fabulous hair but didn’t like makeup. She was in this country 6 months worked for me, then went back to England. She got called to do the dead people’s hair. And there was a meeting and they needed a makeup artist and she mentioned my name and they called me, and that’s how I got the job.
Q: Looking back at everything you’ve worked on, can you tell me about another horror film project you have worked on?
A: There was a movie called “VooDoo” that was very creepy, very bloody. I did stuff for Dick Wolf Productions. But the creepiest thing was “Voodoo” because it was shot in a morgue in Camarillo. I had to make people look like they had been run over and then put real people in bodybags and then into the icebox. By the 2nd day, no one wanted to be by themselves. We also create the “Blood Mary” Comic and sell them on the website. And from there, we see hot sauces, “Blood Mary” mixes, etc.
Q: Can you tell me about your website and what visitors can find when they visit there?
A:
Makeup line, our Goth makeup line, comic books, camouflage face-paint for our military, for soldiers going over to iraq. Sports face paint makeup, makeup for funeral homes. If you’re not gonna wear my makeup today, you will be wearing it one day.
And we’re famous for our blood. We doing a dozen Zombie walks for the “Zombieland” premiers tonight. So we’re very active with our blood.
Q: What's next for you? What else does 2009-2010 hold for you?
A: Yeah, our new project, and I’m always reinventing myself, is our new energy drink, Bloody Mary energy potion. Makes you come alive. Sugar-Free and regular. And our hair color, and we’re working on some things, really great for hair. Hot Topic is one of our biggest customers and they sell a ton of our stuff, especially “White Heat.”
Q: Anything you wish to add for my readers and visitors? Something special about you that they probably do not know?
A:
Face painting, I don’t want to forget where I came from. For instance this Halloween I’ll be face-painting kids at Halloween, in Orlando for kids with terminal cancer.
Q: Finally...this is an "Obscure Horror Movie" website. Can you name the last horror movie you watched either at the theatres or on dvd, etc?
A: The last one I watched was with Will Smith, “I am Legend.” In the theaters was “Friday the 13th.”
Q: How about name a favorite horror film that you have seen that most people probably haven't seen?
A: “House of Wax” with Vincent Price. The one I saw when I was 8 years old. That killed me.
Q: Thank you very much for doing this.
