Wes, Heather and Freddy are back but this time they are actors playing themselves and an evil entity has grabbed the persona of the character of Freddy and decided to really torture and kill the other actors. But Heather has to live her part 1 character for real but will it cost her, her son?
Overall: I’ve not given much respect to the whole series and this film won’t get any either. In some ways I liked this idea but it would have worked better in a brand new film. This film was clearly made for the cash and for the egos. Maybe Wes Craven thought he himself really was the best actor or felt 2 of his favorite producers really should try acting once? The fact Heather has done nothing outside of this series to distinguish herself meant she was about to go homeless without a sequel? Maybe the fact that without Freddy, Englund is doing crap like “Python,” “Starquest 2,” and “The Paper Brigade” meant they all needed one last pay day before falling into obscurity. Regardless of the reason, the creators wanted to do what happened in "Jason X": they wanted a more 21st century bad guy and an excuse to show off special effects. The whole movie within a movie and everyone playing themselves but then “pretending” everything is real...it’s just so fake. I do think this movie is scarier than all the sequels but it almost acts as the beginning of the reality shows. Like this film eventually led to “Big Brother” or something. The idea of the spirit and all was done better in “Fallen” and the whole kid being possessed is clearly better as “Exorcist.” The film copies other films more than it adds to the series...I mean did it add any new information? Nope. Did it address the character of Freddy in any significant way? Nope. It basically played as badly as “Hellraiser 3” and "Friday the 13th Part 5" and Part 9. It’s not really Freddy but a spirit dressed as Freddy? And I’m not really a horror film reviewer, I’m a child support attorney dressed up as a horror film reviewer.
