A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 5: Dream Child (1989)

Freddy is back again and he’s terrorizing Alice by using Alice’s unborn fetus’ dreams to kill off her friends. But he’s not gonna stop there - he wants to invade the baby’s mind too and become human again!

Overall: The worst of the worst in ideas. There is a reason this is the lowest grossing film in the franchise. Taking over a fetus? It’s not just that this subject is simply stupid...it’s the fact the movie cries out for “abortion” as a viable solution. I’m not gonna take sides in the abortion debate but when a movie is suggesting abortion as a solution to curing one’s baby from its nightmares, that’s just in bad taste. I mean is this a horror film or a 90 minute commercial for the religious right? The film argues against Alice being a single mother (can you say “Murphy Brown”?), against abortion, for abortion and finally even suggesting those who commit suicide will not get to heaven. I thought this was a 90 minute political commercial for reinstating the Spanish Inquisition.” Oh yeah, and there was more cheesiness about entering into the dreams of Alice’s friends when per the series own rules, the characters must be asleep and in this movie you never see them fall asleep...they just magically have Freddy appear and address the sleeping later on via dialogue only. The movie is just terrible in all ways and I doubt anyone can sanely disagree that this film has any redeemable value in horror film lore.
