Amityville Horror 2: The Possession (1982)

- written November 2003

A new family has moved into “the house” and this time the house isn’t gonna let anyone get out alive...except for the one person it has possessed to do the job for it.

Overall: Some people think this more of a remake of the actual events – a sort of prequel to part 1 but I don’t think that that sort of opinion is entirely obvious given the film. But it also doesn’t seem to directly reflect back to part 1 either. Unfortunately I saw this film as being a wanna-be “Poltergeist” for the first hour and clearly “Exorcist” in the 2nd hour. Given that the film is just priest vs. devil, in a house no less, lends itself to a claim of a ripping-off of Blatty’s film. And the hints toward incest between the older brother & sister are just uncalled for and do nothing for the overall film. The effects from the beginning are so bad I couldn’t help but think they were doing a remake of “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.” Stay away from the film. Even if Burt Young is in it.

          Comparison: Exorcist meets Exorcist III
