Aliens (1986)

- written January 2004

Ripley is back...and meaner than before. It is 57 years later and she is one tired hyper-sleeper & finally her pod was found, thank God. Seems "the company" is having problems on the last planet Ripley was on, LV426, and want her to help find the solution. So she attaches to a ship of gun-toting marines who are convinced of their own indestructibility, that is until they land on the once-inhabited planet and face off against the beast. Soon only Ripley will be able to save them but she has to look out for a new female friend she’s discovered and will protect to the last breath.

Overall: I caught the special edition of this movie and again I tell you, don’t miss it. Make the original look like a piece of Swiss cheese with the plot holes it originally had. We see a new beginning with lots of stuff about Newt and her family. This film is such an action film, it sets new standards for “blown ‘em up” movies but it isn’t very scary at all. It is just a nice film with awesome effects (which won it 2 Oscars). I still maintain more rounds are fired in this movie that in any film before or after. I mean there is an absolute ton of fire-power exhibited in this 2˝ hour version. Do watch the “Reaction to the film” documentary featurette if you can. What I also enjoy about the movie is the great cast, including 3 people who star 1 year later in “Near Dark.” Basically this is the film that launched the career and aura of Sigourney Weaver. And she deserved all the accolades.

Comparison: Last Action Hero meets Alien

Cool Cast: Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, Lance Henriksen, Paul Resier
