Alien (1979)

- written January 2004

The crew of the deep space mining ship Nostromo are awaken from hypersleep to investigate a strange signal from a nearby planet. They land on the planet only to end up damaging their ship and awakening an alien creature whose ship was marooned there. All seems well at first until a member of Nostromo is attacked by one of the creatures and eventually dies. But it is the loose creature that the rest of the ship must find, before it kills them all.

Overall: Most people should already know what the plot of this film is so I didn’t want to get bogged down with it. The film is an absolute masterpiece of horror and definitely one of the better films out there. I was lucky enough to buy the "Quadrilogy" DVD set before Christmas (of 2003), so I caught the "director’s cut" version. I gotta say that there isn’t too much new in this cut but it does make the film that much better and concise by including the missing scenes. The features were really neat too, including the one called: "Reaction to the Film." What is so amazing is how one woman in 1979 can turn into a box office phenomena years later. This film has no true star in 1979 as most of the actors made their names years later. This film and her performance started Sigourney Weaver into the "buff action chick" hall of fame and the sequel cemented it. The character of Ripley, although good here, was so much better in part 2. However you needed this film to make her better. This film is about scares, about some nice suspense and a little about a female heroine. It’s about one of the all-time famous scenes: chest-burster. It’s about terror and horror and everything that we fear with a space program.

Comparison: Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Tomb Raider
